PERRY – International Paper will close two pulp and paper mills in Coastal Georgia, a move that will put about 1,100 employees out of work, the company announced Thursday.
International Paper will close mills in Alabama and Georgia that will lead to layoffs of more than 1,000 employees.
The closures are part of a broader initiative to reduce International Paper’s annual containerboard capacity by 1 million tons. One mill was nearly 90 years old.
International Paper announced it will close its locations in Savannah and Riceboro, but the losses are being felt in Augusta, too.
The company also will close a packaging facility and a timber and lumber mill, resulting in about 1,100 job cuts.
